High hopes for former basketball player Li Ling

Straits Times, 23 Feb 2005

After giving athletics discard E Xiaoxu, 20, another shot at a sports career in Singapore in October, it looks set to make a similar offer - this time to former national basketball player Li Ling, 18.

The 1.8-metre tall thrower E - who did not meet the target set by the Singapore Amateur Athletic Association and later failed to respond to the re-offer of a new contract - was not interested, saying: 'I do not want to think about joining netball now. I want to sort out my problems first.'

The permanent resident has a job but declined to reveal her occupation.

Li, a Singapore citizen, was a key member of the silver-winning team at the 2003 South-east Asia Games.

She resigned during an inquiry last December, said the Basketball Association of Singapore, following reports from the team leader, manager and coach on her disciplinary problems.

Said chief executive Ng Guat Heng: 'BAS accepted the resignation and allowed her to make a gracious exit.'

The 1.88m Li then approached the netball body. She was put through selection (fitness and agility) tests, taught the basics of the game and had to play some netball games.

NS intends to make her a proposal to join both as a squad member and a full-time employee helping out with its daily operations.

But this will have to wait until she returns on March 14 from China, where she is spending Chinese New Year.

NS president Ivy Singh-Lim is confident she will be able to make a smooth transition to netball.

She said: 'She is tall, athletic and has great potential - assets that make her suitable for the team.

'Ex-basketball players make the best netballers. Many netballers from the Sri Lankan team were formerly basketball players. She is everything we're looking for.'

She added: 'You don't bring foreign athletes in just to win medals. People's lives must be respected and we will ensure she is treated well. We are also interested to find out what her ambition in life is.'

Does being boiled hurt?

It's debatable whether the debate will ever be resolved.

Seriously, isn't this a non-issue? Why is there a need to cook a lobster live in the first place? If you want to eat it live, then don't cook it. You don't see polar bears sitting on the ice grilling their salmon.

Man is a total disgrace of an animal.

Dong Dong Dong Chiang

Yours truly hates CNY. No angpow, no new clothes, no nothing. The only item Mama ever bought me was a RM5.90 lime green T-shirt, when we went to Cheras. All the nice stuff you see on me? My mama never spent a single cent. The lime green T-shirt, I don't think I'm wearing it anytime soon. Too precious you know.

I used to have a bank account. Mama used to bank in my angpow money every CNY. Then she started hating POSB -- I think it's the DBS thing -- so no more angpow. See how illogical this is? I have no idea where all the money went.

Maybe to make it up to me, my mama brought me to Chinatown on CNY eve. The only things we saw to remotely rival my cuteness were the little puppet dancing lions. Apart from that, it wasn't a very pleasant trip. I fell off the food centre stool onto the cockroach infested floor when Mama went off without me to try to catch the fireworks, unsuccessfully of course.

So Mama, hating CNY just as I do, tried to make it up to me somemore by bringing me to watch the sunrise.

We also went to 拜年 to Sir Stamford Raffles. What an exciting CNY...

At I write this, the Pors and Bits reunion dinner has yet to happen. I see no sign of several of my broodmates. I hear my mama saying she wants to bring us out for pizza. Pizza? Pizza?!?!

CNY ends next Wednesday. I'm guessing my cheapskate mama will buy a $1.50 pack of 汤圆 from NTUC to appease us. Or just save a few fat sago seeds from her cheng tng for us.

VD is over too, and instead of chocolates, all I got was a tausarpau.

It's no fun being a polyester wonder.

Hotcakes Happy Meal

Well, not exactly. Since there're 3 of them, instead of 2. Still, it's a happy meal of course. What better way to spend a Sunday morning?

QX4773Z Again

Same location, same matas, same mata chiah, except that it's now in a lot. So law abiding huh? 乖...

So Very Reflective

Did you ever know our thermoplastic green-and-white road signage are really goddamn reflective? Whoa.

And the overall upgrading only cost $4.4 million. Cheap cheap!

In the meantime, guess what this is.

真的吗?

Chinese syllabus from Pr 1 to Sec 4 cut (requires registration)

THE Ministry of Education has slashed the syllabus of all Chinese Language students from Primary 1 to Secondary 4, including those doing Higher Chinese, with immediate effect.

Very soon, you will hear exchanges such as these (quoted from Mr Peter Woo):

你好吗?

好...

吃饱了吗?

饱...

And maybe you will hear the kids intoning robotically:

请你给我五碗炒米粉...

Woe and Behold

I lifted this from http://www.**gh.moe.edu.sg/programmes/ip/index.shtml. It's the same school whose operations manager rescued a vulture and had the good deed receive front page coverage in the Straits Times. Wow! There're even TWO pictures of the vulture on the homepage! Double wow!!

***

From 2005 onwards all Sec 1 students will be admitted to the Integrated Programme.

RATIONALE

As a premier girls' school, **GH seeks to offer an alternative educational track to the O-Levels. By freeing time [less work = more time = more work = less time, therefore: less is more is less. lppl.] for pupils who are clearly university bound for the university [university very important so must mention twice. also, got guarantee one. if cannot make it to the uni maybe can refund school fees.], the IP allows this category [what do you mean by "this category" when there is only one category?] of students to skip the O-level examinations so that they have a greater opportunity [ah, now they say it's only "got chance", not confirmed one.] for other activities e.g. research , enrichment activities. [i.e. academic pursuits. come on, why not say learn a sport, or spend time with family. hey, i'm just helping mcys propagandise ok.]

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

  • To provide a more challenging curriculum for higher ability pupils; [alamak, then what about the lower ability ones? oh, they're not supposed to be in **gh in the 1st place. too bad **ps, no more affiliation for you. talk about **三校本一家...]

  • To set a strong foundation for student success at the “A” levels; [ok people, this is the holy grail. it ain't everything. it's the only thing.]

  • To produce reflective, responsive and responsible learners: pupils who are critical and creative thinkers who will respond with empathy to the world around them and seek to play anactive role in making it a better place. [what a long statement. sounds like an afterthought to me. and totally nonsensical. i don't see how being in the ip can fill you with empathy. ridiculous...].

  • This is Micropor

    Dear Joce jiejie,

Can you see microorganisms? No? So you can't see Micropor, get it? But since I'm such a nice guy -- kindly remember that all of porpor is a heart -- here's another pic of the little fellow, courtesy of my mama's new camera.

Since you are now debate captain, I shall not argue with you over haolianness and honesty. Case closed for now. Let's open it again when your team beats C**bridge.

    Cheers!
